Consumers Are Unhappy

 Financial FAQs

“Consumer confidence declined for a fifth consecutive month in April, falling to levels not seen since the onset of the COVID pandemic,” said Stephanie Guichard, Senior Economist, Global Indicators at The Conference Board. “The decline was largely driven by consumers’ expectations. The three expectation components—business conditions, employment prospects, and future income—all deteriorated sharply, reflecting pervasive pessimism about the future.”

The University of Michigan’s Sentiment Survey Index has also declined for five consecutive months, from 74 to 50.8. It’s mainly about the growing inflation fears.

Year-ahead inflation expectations surged from 6.5% last month to 7.3% this month. This month’s rise was seen among Democrats and Republicans alike. Long-run inflation expectations lifted from 4.4% in April to 4.6% in May, reflecting a particularly large monthly jump among Republicans.” Survey Director Joanne Hsu.

Why so much doom and gloom in surveys while consumers are still fully employed? Consumers don’t like uncertainty any more than businesses. and their lack of confidence could have an even larger impact on economic growth than uncertainty in the financial markets.

Consumer activity drives two-thirds of economic growth, and a recession begins when a majority begin to save more than they spend for a prolonged period. There are many ways to measure this, such as a growing cutback in retail sales.

Retail sales rose just 0.1% in April. That’s a big comedown from a 1.7% spike in March that marked the biggest increase in more than two years because consumers bought ahead of the April 2 tariff announcements that imports from all 180 countries in the world would be taxed at least 10 percent.

Retail sales account for one-third of consumer spending and and shoppers have been hunting for more bargains. Sales have declined in three of the past 13 months as portrayed in the FRED graph and were flat another three months, but are still 4.7 percent higher in a year.

Motor vehicle and parts dealers were up 9.4 percent (±1.8 percent) from last year because consumers knew that motor vehicle import taxes (i.e., tariffs) of at least 25 percent had already been announced, while food service and drinking places were up 7.8 percent (±1.8 percent) from April 2024.

The Conference Board’s Index of Leading Economic Indicators (LEI), another growth indicator that attempts to predict future growth, showed more weakness.

“The US LEI for March pointed to slowing economic activity ahead,” said Justyna Zabinska-La Monica, Senior Manager, Business Cycle Indicators, at The Conference Board. “March’s decline was concentrated among three components that weakened amid soaring economic uncertainty ahead of pending tariff announcements: 1) consumer expectations dropped further, 2) stock prices recorded their largest monthly decline since September 2022, and 3) new orders in manufacturing softened.

Manufacturing will be hardest hit, because Trump’s tariffs will bring higher inflation and interest rates, which especially hurts manufacturers because they need to borrow lots of money to build their factories. The LEI survey reported new manufacturing orders were already softening.

This will defeat what he says is the main reason for tariffs—bringing manufacturers home—as will the immigration crackdown, which reduces the working age population at a time of worker shortage. The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte accounting firm have projected that manufacturing will need an additional 3.8 million workers by 2033. Where will they come from?

In fact, this tells us it’s not the real reason for his tariffs, since he is more concerned about cutting taxes and federal spending that would also disincentivize more domestic manufacturing investment.

No, it looks like Trump’s chaotic tariff war will create bottlenecks last seen during the COVID-19 pandemic or worse, unless he relents.

We know what those supply interruptions did to economic growth during the pandemic and why it took the succeeding Biden administration four years to fix with its bipartisan New, New Deal legislation.

Who Is Going to Mars?

 Answering Kennedy’s Call

“There is nobody in this country who got rich on their own. Nobody. You built a factory out there - good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory...

Now look. You built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a great idea - God bless! Keep a hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.” Senator Elizabeth Warren

Both Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are in a race to land on the moon, and maybe beyond. Their enthusiasm is infectious, but also dangerous. It doesn’t prepare America for future generations. They are also propagating a giant lie that Oligarchs have used to hoard their wealth—that they are exceptionally beings who deserve special treatment (such as tax cuts paid with borrowed money).

It appears in Bezos stated rationale for taking the Washington Post’s editorial page to the right and not allowing opposing viewpoints.

“I am of America and for America, and proud to be so,” Mr. Bezos said. “Our country did not get here by being typical. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic realm and everywhere else. Freedom is ethical — it minimizes coercion — and practical; it drives creativity, invention and prosperity.”

The problem with conservatives’ ethos of personal freedom and free markets is that it doesn’t build forward or think of future generations. It doesn’t provide seed money for future growth as the Biden administration provided in its infrastructure, Inflation Reduction, and CHIPs Act bills that the Trump administration is trying to dismantle—further enlarging the budget deficit.

Musk’s and Republicans’ short-sightedness also applies to the dismantling of USAID. By working to improve the lives of the poorest in the world—mainly Africans today—it lifts up the ability of future generations to provide for themselves. It also prevents future worldwide pandemics, such as Bird Flu, and even the deadly Eboli-like virus now ravaging in war-torn Congo.

The result of Republicans’ belief in free markets has been five recessions since 1980 that were mainly caused by Republicans’ insistence of tax cuts without paying for them. It has led to record budget deficits and a record federal debt of $32 trillion.

The lie they continually foment, in other words, is based on pure greed. The future be damned, let’s go to the moon and beyond! Senator Elizabeth Warren, a former Harvard Law Professor, knows something about this. She has studied the poor, and written a book with her daughter on their dilemma, The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents Are (Still) Going Broke.

“In this exposé, says the Amazon summation, Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi show that modern middle-class families are increasingly trapped by the grinding reality of flat wages and rising costs. Warren and Tyagi reveal how a ferocious bidding war for housing and education has silently engulfed America's suburbs, driving up the cost of keeping families in the middle class, and placing unprecedented pressure on hard-working families.”

And just as big a lie is that creativity, invention, and prosperity isn’t already happening with the AI revolution that has fueled the Big Seven U.S. companies, such as Microsoft, Facebook, to new market highs.

And much of it is being fueled by the Biden administration’s New, New Deal that has already created tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs, and kept US fully employed.

The Donald Trump, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos Oligarchs of the world are not particularly exceptional people, just greedier in wanting to add to their wealth by making ordinary Americans less healthy, wealthy, and safe.

If Musk and Bezos want to end up on Mars, They can use their own massive wealth, not ours!

The End of A Greater Lawlessness

 Answering Kennedy’s Call

I believe we are at another turning point in history, a return to an era of lawfulness that one political party has ignored since the deaths of JFK, Brother Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

And that’s for a few reasons. First was Joe Biden becoming our President, defeating the most lawless president in history, now a convicted felon, and enabling legislation that has given more rights to Americans, rather than taking them away.

Secondly, President Biden has chosen VP Kamala Harris to succeed him in the upcoming presidential election, a former District Attorney and California Attorney General, who understands lawlessness and lawbreakers.

Who would believe events could turn so quickly, from a MAGA Trumpocracy looking backward and promising to destroy our democracy, to a Black-Asian woman who is already exciting many of the younger generation by saying we should look forward to a brighter future?

The JFK assassination on December 22, 1963, was a turning point for me—from hope in Kennedy’s New Frontier to a better future and end to the Cold War, to the hopelessness of a Vietnam War and all that followed.

It reminded me in many ways of the 1960s when there was just as much social unrest and different ideas of democracy. This was the era of McCarthyism and communist witch-hunting, right wing against left wing political views, the civil rights movement, and an unpopular war in Vietnam that was fracturing American communities.

I coped with the dysfunction and cynicism then by searching for communities that could mirror my values and ideals by working in public service organizations and as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

It’s been a long wait for the return to the optimism and can-do spirit I experienced in the 1960s. I began to understand why when I began writing about what was then called the Age of Narcissism.

Social historian Christopher Lasch was perhaps the first to broach the subject in various critiques of modern American society. This included his 1979 best-seller, The Culture of Narcissism: American Life in an Age of Diminishing Expectations that took “what was still mainly a narrow clinical term and used it to diagnose a pathology that seemed to have spread to all corners of American life,” per a NY Times summary of his book.

Former President Trump is a man who epitomized such narcissism and has been diagnosed by multiple mental health professionals with a Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), “using other people as instruments of gratification even while craving their love and approval,” in the words of Lasch.

Lasch saw this as a societal pathology that took individualism to its destructive extreme of ‘me first’ over any concern for others with the breakup of communities and headlong rush to a post-WWII, consumer-driven economy. The extended family was transformed into the nuclear family of a married couple with children; grandparents migrating to senior living centers; as the growing middle class moved to the suburbs and away from traditional family and community values.

“In Lasch’s definition (drawn from Freud), the narcissist, driven by repressed rage and self-hatred, escapes into a grandiose self-conception, using other people as instruments of gratification even while craving their love and approval,” said the review. “Lasch saw the echo of such qualities in “the fascination with fame and celebrity, the fear of competition, the inability to suspend disbelief, the shallowness and transitory quality of personal relations, the horror of death.”

Is this just the beginning of an end to the Age of Narcissism, a turning point away from the worship of celebrity? I believe so. And who better to turn that page than such a highly qualified woman, former Vice President, and maybe our first female president?
