We are now seeing what happens when the Republican Party has adopted what I have called a bully mentality, a state of mind so fixed on domination rather than negotiation that it has inflicted massive damage to the U.S. economy and the American people with its hatred of a government that serves all Americans.

Donald Trump is the latest result of Republicans’ attempts to capture as much wealth as possible. They have dumbed down their party to such an extent that they now have a government dominated by the least educated and less talented that threatens to cause another recession.

And what can we do about it?

I quoted Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman on Republicans’ “ugly” behavior as long

ago as 2014 when Republicans opposed Obamacare. Such an ugly state of mind has never prevailed in this democracy that was founded by vanquishing the biggest bully at the time, King George III.

"...while supposed Obamacare horror stories keep on turning out to be false, it's already quite easy to find examples of people who died because their states refused to expand Medicaid. According to one recent study, the death toll from Medicaid rejection is likely to run between 7,000 and 17,000 Americans each year.”

The Republican Party since President Nixon’s resignation has been a record of economic failures. The 27 Republican-dominated red states are the poorest states, with the greatest income inequality, lowest life spans and highest birthrate mortalities. They require the most assistance from wealthy blue states to balance their budget deficits. And they have the highest death rates, including suicides, from drug and gun use.

It is the reason we are experiencing a second Gilded Age, almost a repeat of the turn of the 20th century that created the robber barons. The enormous wealth generated by the digital age has created an economy dominated by the ultra-wealthy with a massive tax burden born by all Americans.

$trillions have been siphoned away from wage earners to the owners of capital since 1980, which most economists consider the start of the second Gilded Age. The result was a series of recessions leading to the housing bubble and Great Recession during GW Bush’s reign.

And did they learn from it?

No, Republicans then elected another bully to two terms who continues to wreak havoc on the American economy with illegal tariffs and an another unending war. Donald Trump is a convicted felon who has always been a bully preying on the weakest. His many bankruptcies (5) and lawsuits (+3500) attest to his methods of defrauding investors and stiffing his workers that he could not dominate.

But perhaps the saddest example of Republicans’ transformation to a party  is that they no longer protect the environment as they did when President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency in 1972 by signing the Clear Air and Water Acts.

When will Americans finally wake up to the suffering inflicted from such ugly behavior in a party that only caters to the richest and persecutes the poorest in upcoming elections, before inflation becomes uncontrollable, the air unbreathable, and the Iran becomes another unending war like Iraq?

Will it take another Great Recession and loss of millions of jobs before Americans stand up to such a bully mentality once again to end this Gilded Age?

Republican Party's Bully Capitalism

President Trump gave himself “A plus plus-plus-plus-plus-plus” grade on the U.S. economy in a recent interview with Politico cited by The Guardian. That Trump can perpetuate such an obvious lie that contradicts what most Americans feel is an example of bully capitalism at large, my term for what economists have termed is ‘late-stage’ capitalism that has been adopted by the Republican Party, a phase of capitalism marked by extreme wealth inequality and corporate dominance in nearly all aspects of life.

Historian Heather Cox Richardson in her Substack blog Letters From an American states that such corporate dominance is the result of at least $50 trillion in income and assets that has been transferred from the bottom 90% to the top 1% of Americans between 1975 and 2020.

It was done via a succession of Republican administration tax cuts and recessions that grew U.S. federal debt to its current record $39 trillion.

Americans now have the worst income inequality in the developed world as measured by various sources, especially the CIA’s World Factbook. In fact, our income inequality is at the level of developing countries like Mozambique.

The recent Guardian/Harris poll makes clear Trump’s big lie attempts to deny what has really happened since the 1970s that most Americans are seeing with their own eyes.

Democrats are almost twice as likely as Republicans to say their financial security is getting worse – 52% versus 27%. Add in 54 percent of Independents believe the same, who are usually the swing voters that determine elections, said the poll.

And 69 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of Independents believe we are already in a recession.

Why when the stock indexes are at record highs? One hint is that bully capitalism has hit women particularly hard. Nearly two-thirds of women (62%) believe the U.S. is in a recession, +12% from February, says the Harris poll, and women, the primary caretakers of children, are the first to see their suffering from the cuts in social welfare benefits such as SNAP and childcare programs by Republicans.

Trump and Republicans have boosted bully capitalism to a new high by showing their blatant lawlessness and cruelty, such as the ICE agents shooting citizens and non-citizens alike. The good news is that Americans can now see with their own eyes the blatant disregard for human suffering, and it has begun to sway the American public in recent elections.

The biggest lie of all perpetuated by Republicans is that “Government is the problem”, that bully capitalism made things better for everyone. No, the American government was formed to protect all Americans, not just the privileged few.

What is Worrying Consumers?

 “Consumer confidence tumbled in November to its second lowest level since April after moving sideways for several months,” said Dana M Peterson, Chief Economist, The Conference Board. “All five components of the overall index flagged or remained weak.”

Why are consumers worrying so much? Maybe they don’t like government shutdowns? Or, maybe it’s because higher prices and the tariffs are hurting small businesses that depend on imported goods? Or, there are fewer available jobs. Actually, it’s all of the above per the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Survey.

“Consumers’ write-in responses pertaining to factors affecting the economy continued to be led by references to prices and inflation, tariffs and trade, and politics, with increased mentions of the federal government shutdown.”

It’s also becoming obvious that consumers don’t like bully behavior, such as Republicans ramming through the continuing budget resolution without Democrats’ input.

Republicans were in fact attempting to take down Obamacare (ACA) once again by not including the subsidies in the continuing resolution that made it available for middle and low-income folk, I said last week.

Retail sales data finally released for September showed consumers were still shopping and dining out, but not as much.

So what will happen now? This was all before the shutdown. My guesstimate with anecdotal evidence from the likes of Walmart, Target, et. al., is that the more affluent consumers that own homes and stocks will come storming out of the gates after the shutdown and maybe party through the holidays. Government workers will be receiving extra paydays, for instance—i.e., weeks of backpay.

Doug McMillon, Walmart’s outgoing chief executive, cited by MarketWatch, said on the chain’s earnings call that middle-and-upper-income households drove growth in the U.S. during the third quarter. He also said that “lower-income families have been under additional pressure of late.”

And the financial markets have been rallying as it looks like the Fed will cut rates once again in December. Consumers will rally as well as they race to borrow and purchase during the holidays. That’s because polls say they expect inflation to surge over the next year when things will become more expensive.

And Trump has grown wilier with his tariff pronouncements, not touting their benefits so loudly, for instance, which was alarming consumers, while finally admitting that tariffs have been raising prices. His MAGA followers are suffering the most. He must have finally looked at his poor poll numbers that are even lower than during his first term.

The other unspoken shoe to drop that affects consumers is the shrinking job market. ADP payrolls reports that just +42,000 private payrolls were added in October. Trade, Transportation, Education and Healthcare added the most jobs. But -51,000 jobs were lost in other sectors such as Information and Information and business services.

“Private employers added jobs in October for the first time since July, but hiring was modest relative to what we reported earlier this year. Meanwhile, pay growth has been largely flat for more than a year, indicating that shifts in supply and demand are balanced,” said Dr. Nela Richardson, Chief Economist

It’s pretty obvious that we are living in uncertain times, and the old Republican playbook of tax cuts combined with DOGE and Project 25 slashing of government benefits isn’t yet hurting the 10 percent of consumers that have assets, but that leaves 90 percent of Americans still living paycheck to paycheck.

What will happen to them?

The Bully Mentality--III

 ANSWERING the KENNEDYS' CALL

Why has the bullying behavior of one political party intimidated some of our most powerful men? Reports say that billionaires like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and JP Morgan’s Jamie Diman won’t publicly endorse Kamala Harris, even though they have donated to her campaign and say privately they will vote for her?

Timothy Snyder in his latest book, On Freedom, tells us what is necessary to actively preserve and expand freedom, rather than remain quiet, which is the choice for American voters in this Presidential election. One must put their body, not just their money, on the line to successfully oppose authoritarians, as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelens’kyi has done in opposing Putin’s invasion of his land.

Snyder meant one must take a public stand, however dangerous it might seem, because freedom itself is on the line. When Snyder asked Zelens’kyi why he didn’t flee when Russian first invaded the Ukraine as many thought he would do, Zelens’kyi replied, “I could not have done otherwise.”

“He was in the company of others who were also taking risks,” said Snyder. “He understood the situation, he said, because of what it meant to represent others. A president, he said, was only the first grain of sand in a turning hourglass.”

The news that some of our wealthiest men won’t publicly endorse Harris highlights the stakes in this Presidential race, and how fearful even powerful men can be before someone who threatens retaliation, including bodily harm, against anyone who opposes him.

These men don’t understand what underlies the bully mentality of one political party that has no regard for election outcomes. Trump’s own niece has called Trump a coward, and in fact bullies do pick on the weakest who will stand down when opposed by those who stand up to them, say psychologists and psychiatrists.

I first wrote about a certain political party’s Bully Mentality in 2012. “Why do Americans have such a problem with bullies? Whether in schools, in politics, or on Internet social media? The result has been teenage suicides, horrendous school shootings by students who felt bullied or belittled, and now a whole political party that opposes anything that smacks of aiding the poorest, seniors, and less educated.”

Donald Trump’s threats of retaliation have only intensified so close to November 5. Trump aides such as General John Kelley, his Chief of Staff, says he is acting like a fascist who openly supports Russian’s Putin in his Ukraine invasion and has said he wanted “Generals like Hitler had” to put down demonstrations.

The real lessons Americans should take from such tactics of a wannabe dictator was first spelled out in Timothy Snyder’s best-seller On Tyranny:

• #1) “Don’t obey in advance—Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked.”
• #2) “Defend Institutions—It is institutions that help us to preserve decency. So choose an institution you care about—a court, a newspaper, a law, a labor union—and take its side.”
• #3) “Above all believe in truth,” as without truth there is no trust, and without trust there are no effective laws, which leads to tyranny.

Candidate Donald Trump, has made a point of blatant lying, meaning he wants his followers to believe whatever he says rather than objective facts such as global warming, or size of the audience that attended his inauguration.

What better example is there of real freedom and the preservation of our democracy than President Zelens’kyi and the Ukrainian people who are literally putting their own bodies on the line in opposing the Russian bully next door; for those Americans who remain silent?

The Bully Mentality--III

Answering Kennedy’s Call

“Fostering a culture of fear and ignorance is not the way to run a political party, or country, if it would ever come to that.”

I wrote this in 2014 about what I have called the Bully Mentality pervading the Republican Party that has enabled it to coerce its own supporters to vote against their own self-interests, making Republican red states the poorest states in our country.

These are states that in the main have opposed a higher minimum wage, union organizing that would enable workers to bargain collectively, and rely on the richest states via transfer payments to fund much of their governments. (Red states such as Mississippi, W. Virginia, Montana and Kentucky receive more than 30 percent of their revenues from other states).

Why does the USA have such a problem with bullies? Whether in the schools, in politics, or on Internet social media? The result has been teenage suicides, horrendous school shootings by students who felt bullied or belittled, and now a whole political party that opposes anything that smacks of aiding the poorest, seniors, and less educated.

That possibility has come closer with former President Trump seeking a second term without ever conceding that he lost the last election.

Bully Mentality is a state of mind that pervades those who are only good at one thing, preying on the weakest to empower themselves. 

It is something Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman wrote about during the Obama administration when it created Obamacare.

"But nobody expects to see a lot of prominent Republicans declaring that rejecting Medicaid expansion is wrong, that caring for Americans in need is more important than scoring political points against the Obama administration. As I said, there's an extraordinary ugliness of spirit abroad in today's America, which health reform has brought out into the open."

I said then the "ugliness" is really a textbook definition of bullying behavior.  Bullies prey on the most vulnerable and have tried every trick in the book to oppose any programs that smack of aiding those most in need.

• · Derogatory name-calling and nicknaming
• · Spreading rumors or lying about someone
• · Threatening someone
• · Yelling at or talking to someone in a rude or unkind tone of voice, especially without justifiable cause
• · Mocking someone's voice or style of speaking
• · Laughing at someone
• · Use of body language (i.e., the middle finger) to torment someone
• · Making insults or otherwise making fun of someone

The textbook definition fits former President Trump.

If the Republican Party can't keep its constituents poor and less educated, then the Republican Party, now Trump’s party, would lose its hold over them. Conservatives oppose expanding educational opportunities such as Head Start and pre-school aid because it would encourage rational thinking, and an appreciation of science. Their constituents would then begin to understand global warming, and maybe evolution instead of creationist theories that the world was created by a God just 7,000 years ago!

The danger of such behavior is even greater today. We have a Republican presidential candidate who has no compunction about endangering our national security by wanting to weaken NATO and other alliances, been indicted and awaiting trial under the Espionage Act for his carelessness with Top Secret documents, and endangered our economic security with his tax cuts that have created record deficits.

How then have Republicans been given the edge in various polls on the economy and foreign policy? It is another attribute of bully behavior—the total disregard for truth and facts that is at the heart of their propaganda machine.

There are many ways to counter bully mentality. Firstly, by recognizing that bullies are cowards at heart, which is why they avoid confronting those showing strength. It creates a pervasive culture of victimization, a feeling of powerlessness in which those so afflicted transfer their allegiance to a con artist such as Donald Trump.

That is how dictators all over the world have taken and maintained power. Can that happen to the world’s oldest democracy? It’s up to ordinary citizens to stand tall in opposing such behavior. It’s surprising how quickly bullies will disappear when citizens take back their own strength.

Christmas Isn't For Bullies

This is how one of our political parties celebrates the Christmas spirit. Restrict as much aid to the poor and weak as possible—i.e., cut up to $1.5 billion in Medicaid and Medicare spending to ‘pay’ for their 2017 tax cuts, and build a wall while cutting back immigration quotas (even of family members) to keep out as many non-white peoples as possible.

Wait a minute, doesn’t President Trump need them to maintain his properties? Then create enough H2-B exemptions for low-skilled workers to benefit him personally, including 70 granted last year just for Mar-a-Lago, his Florida White House.

What was once the Republican Party is now the Trump Party, cleansed of all Christmas spirit. There’s not even a whiff of Christmas or Christian charity left—instead the Trump Party is tearing babies away from immigrant mothers seeking safe haven, and cutting some $1.4 billion from the food stamp programs that aid the poorest among US.

Why the malevolence towards the weakest who are least able to protect themselves? I have called it the Bully Mentality that tends to prevail during chaotic times a time of pervasive fear and paranoia. It is the prevailing psychosis of the American far right movement.

Bullying behavior manifests itself in many ways, but bullies come into the open when there are no leaders that will stand up to them to condemn the hate and cruelty bullies always manifest against those weaker than them. And today we have a leadership vacuum. There is no spiritual leader such as Martin Luther King, Jr., and no political leader since former President Obama has disappeared from the public sphere.

Such malevolence towards others shows in many ways and fits the definition of bully behavior. Psychology Today has posted a list of bullying behavior, a list that fits the Trump Party to a tea:

• – Uncontrolled anger and unpredictable irritability, frequently directed at the weakest people (‘safe targets’) or those perceived as a future threat
• – A sociopathic ability to control their own image – the selective ability to look like a different person to different audiences – for example, being aggressive to ‘subordinates’, while being charming and helpful to others
• – Having little status outside of work, bullies wield the power that their job gives them with vicious zeal
• – Running ‘witch-hunts’
• – Gratuitous domineering behaviour – sometimes physical
• – The ability to make the unreasonable seem reasonable, even to the victims
• --Projecting their own inadequacies onto others
• – Making irrational accusations
• – Publicly putting people down
• – Sadistic enjoyment in humiliating others

Americans love to celebrate the Christmas spirit. It is the time to give aid and comfort to those less fortunate, to treat all with empathy and love, rather than hateful cruelty. Celebrating brotherhood is also one of the best ways to stand up to bullies. Remember, bullies are really cowards who only dare to prey on the weakest.

So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone in the spirit of love that is the best weapon against hate!

What is the Bully Mentality?

The Trump administration and congressional Republicans’ “stonewalling” efforts, as House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi has put it, are the latest example of the bully mentality, but few pundits or even Democrats seem to understand its exact meaning.

I began to write about the bully mentality, as I called it in 2014, initially in response to Republicans’ bullying tactics, such as House Majority Leader John Boehner’s “no compromise” vow to block any Democratic legislative initiatives, rather than negotiate bills and policies acceptable to both sides of the aisle.

And Republicans have been getting away with using such bully tactics to forward their agenda for years, perhaps even since House Majority Leader Newt Gingrich in 1994 as part of the Contract With America dissolved the congressional joint committee to work out differences in legislation with Democrats, “because I can”.

And Democrats don’t seem even now to want to confront Republican stonewalling in carrying out their constitutionally mandated oversight of the Executive Branch when the White House is attempting to block every attempt to investigate the many possible crimes enumerated in the Mueller Report.

Most people recognize bullying when they encounter it—someone using strong- arm techniques in the school yard, or cyberbullying in social media—but not the bully mentality behind it.
Personnel Today, an organizational management website, provides an easy definition: “Bullying behavior often seems gratuitous, with no obvious motivation other than to cause pain and humiliation and satisfy something in the mind of the bully.”

It lists the characteristics of a bullying mentality:
o Underlying feelings of insecurity, inadequacy and a fear of ‘being found out’
o Fear that their status is based on their position, rather than their own qualities
o Being in the wrong job (fearing that they are ‘not up to it’)
o Authoritarian personality characteristics
o Excessive use of defense mechanisms, such as projection, rationalisation, displacement and denial
o An inability to accept or engage with their own shortcomings
o Trying to ‘right wrongs’ – taking revenge on innocent people for perceived wrongs done to them
o Boosting their own ego by undermining other people
o Feeling a need to crush people whom they perceive as a threat to their precarious status

Most research on bullying has been with schools as they have been battling the rise of bullying in schools.

Following the 2016 Presidential election, the Southern Poverty Law Center conducted an online survey of 10,000 K-12 teachers, counselors and administrators on the negative impact of the election. Educators reported a skyrocketing of targeting and harassment of students that began last spring, most frequently in majority white schools, including verbal harassment, slurs and derogatory language, and incidents involving Nazi salutes, swastikas and Confederate flags.

“The behavior is directed against immigrants, Muslims, girls, LGBT students, kids with disabilities and anyone who was on the ‘wrong’ side of the election,” reads the SPLC report, The Trump Effect: The Impact of The 2016 Presidential Election on Our Nation’s Schools. “It ranges from frightening displays of white power to remarks that are passed off as ‘jokes.’” Ninety percent of educators say their schools have been negatively impacted for the long-term, while 80 percent said students are increasingly worried about the effect of the election on themselves and their families.”

And a national survey just released by the Human Rights Campaign found that bullying—which has occurred more frequently since the onset of the 2016 presidential campaign—is on the rise since the election.

“The survey of 50,000 young people ages 13-18 is the largest study of its kind, and it tells a disturbing story. Seventy percent of teens said they witnessed bullying, hate messages or harassment during or since the election. Of those incidents, 70 percent were racially motivated, 63 percent were based on sexual orientation, 59 percent were motivated by immigration status, and 55 percent of incidents were related to gender.”

Such behavior cannot be tolerated in a participatory democracy such as ours. The current White House’s behavior is a case in point, and endangers more than our domestic security, but that of our democratic allies as well.

It endangers our warming planet as well, when such a bully mentality prevails in our alliances, including the Paris Accord which many be the world’s best effort to mitigate global warming that even the US Pentagon warns endangers national security.

One vanguishes bullies by standing up to them—in whatever form they manifest, whether a dictator, autocrat, terrorist or gang leader—who we mustn’t forget prey on the weak and defenseless, yet seem to magically disappear when the fear they attempt to engender is opposed by sufficient courage.

President Trump's Bully Mentality

President Trump’s first days in office were alarming for several reasons. He immediately began attacking the press, while intentionally stating falsehoods such as he would have won the popular vote, but for “3 to 5 million” fraudulent votes. Or, maybe they weren’t intentional falsehoods? Since most of those falsehoods are easily debunked, such as the size of the crowds at Friday’s Inauguration and Saturday women’s march.

Then you have the CIA meeting, where he stated that it was the lying media that made up his dispute with the intelligence community, whereas it is easy to check Trump’s speeches and Twitter messages for all to see he was the one that criticized the intelligence community for their findings that Vladimir Putin’s intelligence services wanted him elected.

So could it be that he is delusional, the words of Mother Jones’ David Corn? Or is it possible that he only listens to news from the likes of Breitbart, The National Inquirer, Fox, and Russ Limbaugh that cater to his voters, not the mass media that reports to the rest of US?

No, it is far more likely that he believes his success in business, such as it is, was due to his bullying tactics, tactics that browbeat investors and lenders to such an extent that he can no longer rely on U.S. investors and banks to finance his projects. So he doesn’t care—and may even have contempt for—facts or truths or any kind that don’t further his agenda.

A New York Times reporter on Lawrence O-Donnell’s MSNBC Last Word said it reminded her of the behavior of dictators, such as the current Russian and Chinese autocrats who considered all news as grist for their propaganda mills.

I have written about the bully mentality several times that has led to increased bullying in school, and even gun violence. It is a mentality that attempts to impose a bully’s version of reality on the real world for the sole purpose of domination. President Trump has always acted the bully, which is the reason for his history of lawsuits and bankruptcies, so that facts are only useful in so much as they support his positions.

Evidence of Trump’s bullying tactics also comes from his words on Twitter and elsewhere, reports Groff Beattle, a professor of Psychology at Edge Hill University who specializes in gestures, has discussed how Trump uses the body language and mannerisms of a bully, such as the exaggerated use of his hands.

Also comments such as “mentally sick”, “dummy”, “looser” or “looked disgusting” are all examples of bullying language on Trump’s Twitter. Trump’s bullying tactics include calling President Obama the founder of a terrorist organisation and insinuating that Clinton took drugs prior to a debate. Furthermore, he has mocked the disability of reporter Serge Kovaleski, portrayed immigrants and foreigners as dangerous people, rapists or “criminal aliens”, and demonstrated a significant lack of respect for women generally.

How does one oppose such destructive behavior? First, remember that bullies have to prey on the weakest, and avoid confrontation with those stronger because of their own insecurities. Trump preyed on naïve students and the elderly in his Trump University scam. And he stiffed workers and employees when building his Trump Casinos either by paying them less than was contractually agreed to, or not at all.

Combine it with his case-study narcissism that requires he be constantly in the limelight. So standing up to such a bully means the news media should ignore his tantrums, rather than commenting on them. Remember that he makes such outrageous lies to gain even more attention.

– Gratuitous domineering behaviour – sometimes physical
– The ability to make the unreasonable seem reasonable, even to the victims
--Projecting their own inadequacies onto others
– Making irrational accusations
– Publicly putting people down
– Sadistic enjoyment in humiliating others

The list is endless of President Trump’s bullying tactics, and the responses are well known. There is even a government website, https://www.stopbullying.gov/ to help understand what the bully mentality is all about.

How sad it is that this US President, the most powerful person on earth, is setting such an example of his own weakness and insecurity.
