We knew as long ago as Nixon’s Watergate that the Republican Party harbored a lawless tendency when it suited them. Why else would President Reagan engineer the illicit Iran contra arms deal with Khomeini, or President GW Bush invade Iraq when UN inspectors already knew Saddam Hussein had destroyed his weapons of mass destruction a decade earlier, I said in 2017?

Now we have illegal tariffs and an unpopular war with Iran, one that will drive inflation even higher and might take years to return to the Federal Reserve’s 2 percent target to fulfill its mandate of full employment with stable prices.

The result? Another recession, sooner or later, as happened during Presidents Reagan (2) and GW Bush terms. In Bush’s case, he managed to turn four years of Clinton budget surpluses (1996-2000) that could have kept social security and Medicare solvent for decades into a worldwide Great Recession (2008-09), the worst since the Great Depression, according to most economists.

President Trump’s Republicans are following the same path with his huge tax cuts while borrowing $trillions to fight his wars, cutting public services to the bone and closing whole departments by firing more than 300,000 federal employees.

Republicans have doubled down on their lawlessness by allowing his illegal wars and tariffs, and maybe what could precipitate the next recession; their determination to deport as many undocumented immigrants as possible without allowing them due process or a legal pathway to citizenship.

Immigrants are taxpayers that add workers to our shrinking population, and their loss is depriving our economy of essential services—agricultural workers that supply our groceries, for starters, but also a large part of construction, healthcare, transportation and lower paying service workers in leisure and hospitality.

This can only be done because Trump’s Republicans either ignore or disregard the civil laws, as well as economic laws, and even the constitution in their hunger for power. This is impoverishing more Americans, not to speak of turning a blind eye to the illegal enrichment of the Trump family and their supporters.

What can be done to return the $trillions in wealth and power that Republicans have taken away from the American people via their massive tax cuts to corporations and wars that were never paid and ignore the most basic rules of capitalist enterprise, such as debts must be paid, contracts and treaties honored?

The sad fact is that the Iran war wasn’t necessary because President Obama had already negotiated a nuclear arms agreement with Iran and Trump’s tariffs have been mostly based on ignorance of foreign trade tradeoffs, not unfair trade practices.

The history of greater lawlessness and hunger for more power is leading to a massive disruption in foreign trade which is the life blood of the world’s economies. It is repeating the mistakes that choked off world trade in 1930 and led to the Great Depression.

The question is how much longer will consumers and voters tolerate the record of Republicans’ failures that have led to four recessions just since 1980 that were the result of their hunger for more power?

Polls are showing that ordinary Americans are beginning to understand what it means.

I quoted MarketWatch columnist Brett Arends because it was a cause of our Revolutionary War for those that remember the Boston Tea Party. King George III tried to tax American colonists and it didn’t work. Why does ‘King’ Trump believe it will work when he promised he would bring down inflation on “Day 1?”

We are already seeing the result in almost all prices. Walmart and Target have already announced that they will raise some prices because they can no longer absorb the increased cost of their imported goods from the tariffs.

It’s Trump’s attempt to bring back President McKinley’s Gilded Age of robber barons and rampant corruption that prevailed in 1900, until McKinley was assassinated and Vice President Teddy Roosevelt succeeded him and initiated the modern Progressive era of reform.

“The great burst of industrial activity and corporate growth that characterized the Gilded Age was presided over by a collection of colorful and energetic entrepreneurs who became known alternatively as “captains of industry” and “robber barons.” They grew rich through the monopolies they created in the steel, petroleum, and transportation industries. Among the best known of them were John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Leland Stanford, and J.P. Morgan”.

The Foreign Trade Court that has jurisdiction on such matters has ruled Trump’s tariffs without congressional approval are illegal. Yet gave Trump the opportunity to continue the tariffs while it was being appealed.

And though Trump agreed to repay the tariff taxes he has already collected if he loses the case on appeal, he continues to levy the tariffs.  Why? They already amount to more than $130 billion the Treasury must repay that it has already collected.

Because he knows our federal debt is unsustainable, and so he must find some way to pay for the tax cuts in his big beautiful tax cut bill that are projected to add $5 trillion to the federal debt.

On May 16, Moody’s Ratings downgraded the U.S. credit rating, citing an “inability of the nation to address large and growing deficits.” This downgrade means that for the first time ever, all three major credit ratings agencies have downgraded U.S. credit below their top AAA rating.

Trump is therefore begging an appeals court to allow the tariffs. It could lead to a “GREAT DEPRESSION” Trump said on social media, with Americans “forced from their homes” that will threaten social security and Medicare.

But what if the higher tariffs lead to stagflation, the combination of slow growth and inflation that caused so much grief in the 1970s? Economists are saying it’s a risk. Higher prices are already affecting consumers that power 70 percent of economic activity and the retailers.

So what do we need that can stop Trump’s highway robbers from not only milking the American people of their money and social benefits, but reversing the environmental and public health protection that protected Americans until Trump’s big beautiful tax cut bill and DOGE firings eviscerated the federal government?

Do we need another revolution?

The Trump administration’s efforts to bully California in the past week by sending in contingents of the California Coast Guard and active-duty Marines to ‘guard’ its ICE agents that are bent on rounding up as many undocumented workers in California as possible, is almost comical.

Would they try the same with Japan or Germany, who have economies that are basically the same size? Of course not, though Trump wants to pick on smaller Canada, and maybe Denmark’s Greenland.

Of the 850,000 farmworkers in California that are providing close to one-quarter of the agricultural produce of America, some 400,000 are seasonal workers (i.e., with permits) or undocumented, which is why President Trump has told ICE workers to stop rounding them up, for fear Americans will no longer have enough fresh (or canned) produce to eat.

It’s a sign of the Trump administration’s tremendous ignorance that their efforts to deport as many of the 11 million undocumented U.S. workers is looking worse than ridiculous, it is enraging the populous of those cities that depend on immigrants to work in the service and hospitality industries, as well as feed them.

If Trump also thinks he can humble California by attacking the University of California system (UC) as he is doing to Harvard, he is also mistaken.

The system's ten campuses presently have a combined student body of 299,407 students, 26,100 faculty members, 192,400 staff members, over 2.5 million living alumni, and $41.6 billion in annual operating revenues.

And as an alumnus, I can attest it teaches or promotes no particular ideology or political view, just the scientific and social science truths that are verified and tested empirically, not by rumor or conspiracy theories.

Trump and the Republican Party have succeeded in bullying the smaller red states they have dominated since the 1970s, making them the poorest states in income (many have no minimum wage), health care, social services and education.

Republican led red states are mostly dependent on the excess tax revenues passed on to them from blue states.

“In 2023, the federal government collected around $4.67 trillion from states and their residents through taxes on individuals and businesses and redistributed about $4.56 trillion back to states and residents through programs like Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, and education grants, says USA Facts.

Virginia alone depended on $79 billion in transfer payments in 2023 to balance its budget from states like California and New York, who contributed $78B and $89B in 2023 to the federal kitty.

So why have Republicans gone to all this trouble that will do very little harm to the likes of UC and California’s economy? Their red states can’t do without the income coming from blue states.

Oh, their leaders want more tax cuts, which will continue to increase federal debt. Americans will find out soon enough that’s not how to stay in business.
